BARCODING TECHNOLOGY
What is Barcoding Technology?
In a geometrical view, it is the parallel lines of varying widths and spacings where the information/data could be encoded and depicted later by an optical-machines. Earlier the barcodes could be found in the pack of chewing gum company and now due to industrial evolution and automation, it is found everywhere!
How barcodes are structured?
The surface of barcodes has 95 columns which are evenly spaced, some are black and some are white. These columns are grouped into 15 sections, among them 12 are used for actual visible number and the remaining three act as the guards – left guard, right guard, and center guard.
How the barcode works?
From the elementary understanding, we all know when the light is passed through white and black color, a major portion of the light would be absorbed by black color and everything was reflected by white color. Using the idea, the laser light is forced to fall on the barcode surface in which white lines reflect most of the light while black lines don’t. The machine/computer interprets the absorbed one as “1” and reflected one as “0” and then processes further to represent the actual data stored.
Types of Barcodes
There are two types of barcodes, linear and 2D which include many variants that are listed below. Linear or 1 Dimensional barcode holds a very limited amount of data as compared to ‘Two Dimensional Barcodes’. 2D barcodes had feasibility to hold huge data and can read them even if they are partially damaged.
Barcode Type | Aspect |
---|---|
Code 25 | Lines with only two widths |
Code 128 | Lines with many widths |
PDF417 | Stacked lines with many widths |
Data Matrix | Pixel matrix with L-shaped border as marker |
QR Code | Pixel matrix with markers in the corners |
Aztec | Pixel matrix with marker in the center |
